Rahall announces new flight options for Beckley

Rep. Nick Rahall said Friday that Locair, a growing taxi airline, will be adding Beckley as a stop along its Somerset, Ky., to Baltimore route, offering additional travel options into and out of West Virginia.

“Southern West Virginia is an excellent choice for additional flights for Locair Airlines with such beautiful tourist attractions such as the world-famous Greenbrier and some of the best outdoor adventure destinations in the country,” Rahall said.

“Transportation accessibility remains a constant factor in the economic success of our mountainous state which provides us with breathtaking views, but also creates challenges for transportation. I have no doubt that this new flight option will open doors for southern West Virginia.”

The flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday starting Sept. 14. Flights will take place using twin-engine, American-built Fairchild Metro III aircraft.

Raleigh County Memorial Airport Manager Tom Cochran said the move is the latest step toward increasing air service in Beckley.

“That’s something that we’re trying to expand upon — the service opportunities out of Beckley,” he said. “This will give us connections into low-budget carriers’ areas, such as Southwest or Air Tram in Baltimore.

“Hopefully, we can expand further upon this as we go,” he added.
