A PGA Tour event to be known as The Greenbrier Classic will be staged at the White Sulphur Springs resort next summer.
The announcement came Wednesday afternoon at a joint press conference by The Greenbrier and the PGA Tour that included the hotel’s owner, Jim Justice, joined by Gov. Joe Manchin, Greenbrier golf pro emeritus Tom Watson and, via videoconference, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.
The tournament will be played July 26-Aug. 1 on the Old White course and will be a FedEx Cup event carrying a $6 million purse.
The Greenbrier will form a separate non-profit charitable organization to serve as the tournament operator.
The agreement with the PGA Tour will run through 2015.
For complete details about tournament, see Thursday's edition of The Register-Herald.
