— On Monday morning, local law enforcement officers found they were the unwitting heroes in a “furry tale” involving three bears.

Around 8:45 a.m., an off-duty officer was on Russell Street when he spotted a mother black bear and her two cubs in a brushy lot, right in the middle of a residential area of Beckely.

Officers from Beckley Police Department and West Virgnia Division of Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife quickly showed up and set up a safe perimeter for the bears. They were able to tranquilize all three of the furry creatures.

Once they were checked for injuries and discovered to be healthy, the mama bear and her cubs were loaded into an enclosed drum and taken to a safe location to be released back into the wild.

The adult bear weighed 150 pounds, according to Beckley Police Lt. J.R. Corey of BPD.
