Police arrest sex offender for failing to register

A Beckley man was arrested Monday for failure to register as a sex offender.

Jimmy Carlyle Whitt, 53, of Beckley, was convicted in September 2010 for attempted sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl in Mercer County, West Virginia State Police Cpl. R.A. Daniel reported Tuesday.

Whitt must register his address with a national Sex Offender Registry for the rest of his life under federal law.

Whitt registered that he was employed with a company in Cadiz, Ohio, according to officials.

He had also lived in Harrison County, Ohio, temporarily.

Whitt’s employment in Ohio ended June 3, said Daniel, but he did not register the change of address.

Whitt was living in Beckley when he was arrested.

He was charged with one count of felony failure to register as a sex offender and was arraigned before Raleigh County Magistrate Rick Jones.

He was at Southern Regional Jail Tuesday on $1,000 bond.
