In anticipation of growth fueled by the landmark Boy Scouts of America reserve opening in 2013, ACE Adventure Resort is embarking on an unprecedented lodging initiative, adding as many as nine cabins to the 61 cabins and group lodges it proffers.
Four cabins designed by Blue Ridge Log Homes, of Staunton, Va., are now under construction on the 1,500-acre resort, according to vice president Ernie Kincaid. Another three to five will be added before 2013 when the Summit Bechtel Family National Scouting Reserve at nearby Glen Jean hosts its first Jamboree, during which more than 200,000 guests are expected to visit the New River Gorge region.
Established in 1980 as American-Canadian Expeditions, ACE annually hosts more than 50,000 visitors, providing guided rafting and kayaking instruction on the New and Gauley rivers and offering more than a dozen outdoor-adventure activities, including fishing, ATV tours, horseback riding, mountain biking, ropes courses, rock climbing, kayak tours, three paintball fields, team-building facilities, a mud obstacle course, stand-up paddle boarding, zip-line and canopy tours, and a five-acre adventure lake with a swimming beach.
ACE now also provides guided tours along the catwalk under the New River Gorge Bridge.
Based on the size of the resort, the number of guests it serves and the number of recreation venues it provides, The Travel Channel in 2010 named ACE “the largest adventure resort in North America.”
Kincaid says he expects the 10,600-acre scouting center, located less than 5 miles south of the resort, to significantly increase the need for lodging and recreation in the region. Further scouting-based expansion adjacent to the ACE resort will be announced in the near future, he said.
