Howerton admits violating rules of probation

A Beckley man charged with two counts of child abuse admitted Thursday to violating his probation from previous crimes.

Herbert “Jeffrey” Howerton Jr., 30, of Beckley, was recently charged with two counts of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and domestic battery.

Raleigh County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Tom Truman said Howerton was on probation for two previously committed crimes, including fraud with an access device and receiving stolen property worth more than $1,000.

Howerton admitted to Judge Robert Burnside that he had violated his probation during a hearing Thursday.

Burnside revoked Howerton’s probation and sent him to the Division of Corrections.

The child abuse charges stem from a Feb. 7 arrest where police said he allegedly kicked his fiancée’s 7-year-old son in the abdomen and beat him with a belt.

Howerton waived the time limit for his preliminary hearing Tuesday and further court proceedings have not yet been scheduled.
