Several defendants enter guilty pleas in Raleigh court

BECKLEY — Several individuals entered guilty pleas Monday for unrelated crimes before Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge John A. Hutchison.

Brittany Ladawn Cook, 26, of Bluefield, pleaded guilty to attempt to commit a felony.

Raleigh County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Andy Dimlich said Cook admitted she taped a Suboxone pill to an envelope and mailed it to her sister, who is serving time at Southern Regional Jail.

Cook now faces a potential sentence of one to three years.

Michael Carr, 32, of Beckley, pleaded guilty to operating a clandestine drug laboratory.

Dimlich said Carr faces a potential two- to 10-year sentence.

Kevin Burford, 47, pleaded guilty to felony escape from a Division of Corrections facility.

Dimlich said Burford was housed in Beckley and was given a furlough, but he failed to return when he was directed to do so.

He faces a determinate sentence of up to five years.

Ashley Cook, 22, of Beckley, pleaded guilty to first degree robbery and felony escape.

Cook faces no less than 10 years for the first degree robbery charge and up to five years for felony escape.

Dimlich said Cook admitted that she and two male suspects drove to Alice’s II. One male went inside, looked around and returned to the vehicle. Cook and the other male then got out of the vehicle and went inside.

Their identities were concealed, and the male subject brandished a knife and they fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Dimlich said after Cook was placed on home confinement as a condition of bond, after one month, she cut her home confinement band and she absconded, resulting in the felony escape charge.
