Al Martine files for Raleigh County Board of Education

Retired Meadow Bridge High School principal Al Martine has filed to run for a seat on the Raleigh County Board of Education.

After 12 years at the helm of the MBHS, a “Success School,” Martine is currently substituting as a teacher and administrator in Raleigh County schools.

Martine’s educational background also includes working as an adjunct instructor for Concord University and Bluefield State College and serving on the board of New River Community and Technical College.

He is active with the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee. He earned master’s degrees from both West Virginia and Marshall universities, is a retired major from the West Virginia Army National Guard and serves on a number of nonprofit boards.

His wife Gina is a sixth grade teacher at Shady Spring Middle School.

Before entering education, Martine owned and operated WWNR radio.

Martine said it became apparent to him after serving on bond committees for both Fayette and Raleigh school boards that major changes are being made in the public school system that affect curriculum and finance. There is a domino effect of educational pressure that is filtering down from the West Virginia Board of Education to local boards, he said.

He added that there should be an active individual on the Raleigh board who understands the needs of educating our children and the challenges that face teachers.
