Former employee sues pain clinic

A former Beckley Pain Clinic employee filed a lawsuit against the clinic, alleging unlawful age discrimination, disability discrimination and illegal employment practices.

Melanie Tilley, 54, filed the civil suit June 2 in Raleigh County Circuit Court against Beckley Pain Clinic.

According to the suit, Tilley had 26 years of experience in the health care industry before working at Beckley Pain Clinic, including eight years at Plateau Medical Center as administrative clinical director.

When she applied for the position at the pain clinic, she said she was asked about suffering from diabetes and told that they “did not want to hire someone who was diabetic,” but she did not reply to the question.

Tilley began working at the clinic, where she was in charge of staffing, scheduling, patient issues, outstanding bills, computer issues and recruiting.

She claims when she was hired, she immediately experienced hostile and improper treatment.

Doctors and staff at the clinic allegedly called her an “ogre” and a “bitch.” They also called her stupid, threw papers at her and snorted at her like a pig.

In October 2013, Tilley was in a car crash and sustained brain injuries, including blurred vision, speech difficulties and memory loss, according to the suit.

She required time off for recovery, and when she returned, she claims Beckley Pain Clinic changed her from a salaried employee to an hourly employee. She also said she was told her work had declined.

In the suit, she said she was fired in April 2013 in retaliation because she filed reports about her abusive and hostile work environment.

She is being represented by Hoyt Glazer of Klein, Sheridan and Glazer in Huntington and she is seeking compensatory damages, attorney’s fees, interest and court costs.

The case has been assigned to Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge John A. Hutchison.

An official with Beckley Pain Clinic offered no comment.
