Bridge Day, state tourism team up for launch of photo contest today

In anticipation of the 35th anniversary of Bridge Day, event organizers have teamed up with the West Virginia Division of Tourism to sponsor a photo contest that offers participants the opportunity to share their favorite pictures taken with friends, family, pets or solo in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.

“This is the 35th anniversary of Bridge Day, so we wanted to do something special this year,” said Cindy Dragan, chair of the Bridge Day Commission.

“When we were talking about what makes Bridge Day such a great event, we realized that there are families that reunite for the event every single year, and it’s kind of a tradition for them to go to the bridge to celebrate that.”

Entrants in the photo contest will have a chance to win several one-of-a-kind packages, including special access to a prime “basejump-watching” vantage point on Bridge Day and three-day, three-night adventure packages in the New River Gorge.

“Our idea was: Let’s do something now that shows not only how fun Bridge Day is, but all of the different adventures had all over the state of West Virginia,” said Dragan.

“We want to reconnect with family, friends and communities to show that there are fun things to do all over the state.”

Starting today, participants can upload their entries under the “Photo Contest” tab on the Bridge Day Facebook page. Entries can be uploaded under two categories: “My Wild & Wonderful Bridge Day” and “My Wild & Wonderful West Virginia.”

Entrants are encouraged to submit a creative caption along with their photo that best depicts how to have fun in West Virginia, whether at Bridge Day or during another experience in the state. Multiple entries are allowed.

Winners will be selected based on image quality, theme relevance and creativity, event organizers said.

Entries will be accepted through June 29, after which submissions will be closed and the public will be able to vote for the three grand-prize winners from June 30 to midnight of July 3. The top three winners will be announced July 4.

The grand prizes are a three-day/three-night, all-inclusive package for four from Adventures on the Gorge, which includes a rafting run on the Lower New, mountain bike rentals, TreeTops canopy tours, and more.

Numerous other prizes will be awarded throughout the duration of the contest, including Bridge Day VIP media passes, a Bridgewalk Tour on Bridge Day, a Highline ride, round-trip airfare for two between Washington, D.C., and Beckley’s Raleigh County Memorial Airport, and a two-night stay in a cabin at Lake Stephens.

Other event sponsors include Ace Adventure Resort, Adventures on the Gorge, New River Convention & Visitors Bureau, Raleigh County Memorial Airport, River Expeditions and Visit Southern West Virginia.
