Family Dollar store closing its doors in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE — A package of bologna, two boxes of margarine, and one can of cinnamon rolls. That’s all that’s left in the cooler at Family Dollar in Fayetteville.

After 5 years in business, the store at 207 W. Maple Avenue is closing.

“I hate it,” says Assistant Manager Allison Hamm. “Everyone here is really nice to work for. We finally got a good crew, and I hate it really bad.”

A fire sale has been going on at the store for weeks, with goods now marked down to between 30 and 50 percent of their full prices.

Ever since they announced the sale, the store has been very busy, according to employees.

The store’s five person staff heard the news about a month ago, but Hamm says they weren’t given any detailed explanation as to why the store is closing, aside from the obvious fact that it wasn’t making enough profit.

“People keep asking me, but I don’t know,” she says.

The doors will shut for good sometime before the end of the year, according to employees.

They will be able to transfer to other Family Dollar stores if there are openings, but so far there aren’t any available.

Family Dollar also has locations in Montgomery, Summersville, Oak Hill, Rainelle, Mt. Hope, and the Beckley area, where there are four stores.

A real estate agent’s sign in the front yard of the building indicates that it is for sale or lease.

The property last sold in 2007 to Ang Real Estate Holdings of Murrysville, Pa., according to Fayette County tax records.

Family Dollar isn’t the only Fayette County retail business that has faced financial trouble in recent months. In downtown Oak Hill, the Value Plus grocery store is also going out of business.

Its owner, David Stephens, has told media outlets that remaining viable is difficult with competition from a nearby Walmart and Kroger.

K-Mart has also confirmed that it will close the doors of its location on Route 19 in Oak Hill on January 27. Fifty-nine workers will be affected.
