BAG to offer Zen art class

Beckley Art Group will host a Zen Oriental Art class starting Aug. 7 in the Beckley Art Center classroom.

The tools, “The Treasures,” and “The Four Gentlemen” of Zen Oriental Art Brush Stokes will be explored in the 10-week class, held Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m.

The class will be taught by Glenn Runions, a retired teacher from Morgantown. He taught biology, chemistry, horticulture, master gardening and art.

While teaching West Virginia University Extension classes, Glenn started a class called Chinese Calligraphy through Oshe Lifelong Learning Institute for students 65 and older.

He received training from Monica Welks (plein air landscapes), Sterling Martin (landscapes, water), Chem Khee Chee (fish, water, everything), Lian Quan Zhen (combining East and West) and Laurie Goldstein Warren (figure painting), all of whom he credits for helping him develop his technique in Chinese art.

Price per session is $10 for Beckley Art Group members and $15 for non-members. Price for supplies will be approximately $25 and will be discussed during the first session.
