Shady team going to world contest

At Shady Spring Middle School, they’ve built an archery team that would make Robin Hood jealous.

The team of 24 will be going to Madison, Wis., next weekend to compete in the World Archery Tournament.

To help send the kids to the tournament, one local business owner has been selling tickets for a drawing, to be held today, for two Matthews bows. One bow is from his shop and the other was sent from the manufacturer.

“This isn’t about me or my store,” Cardinal Pawnbrokers and Sporting Goods owner Mike Crook said. “This is about a good group of kids. We’ve got 24 kids that are going to the world bow shoot in Wisconsin. They represent their community in a positive manner.

“It’s all about the kids and the achievements. This is a big country. These 24 kids finished third in the country right here at Shady Spring Middle School and now they’re competing with the world.”

One of the school’s assistant archery coaches said he couldn’t be more proud of his team.

“It’s phenomenal,” Chris Payne said. “We never would have dreamed that they would have made it to this level for sure. It’s just about hard work. They practice a tremendous amount.”
