Himalayan monk to lecture at Tamarack
BECKLEY —
Swami Vidyadhishananda Giri will lecture on the relationship between the mind and the heart at Tamarack Friday at 7:30 p.m.
His Holiness is trained in the Vedic tradition dating back to around 1000 B.C. He is a yogi, mystic and scholar who offers the wisdom of eastern philosophy for western society.
According to a news release, Friday’s discourse will expound upon the Sanskrit verse, “upon the heart is the knowledge of the mind.” Related inquiries will address if the mind resides in the heart, what controls the heart rate, what is mind-stuff and why we say “learn it by heart.”
The monk has lectured around the world, focusing on interpreting Sanskrit lessons for a modern, scientific society. In 2006, Swami Vidyadhishananda was awarded the title Great Ordained Teacher, and at a very young age by a Sanskrit university in Calcutta for his meditative insight and ability to teach the philosophical nuances of Sanskrit. This degree is one of the highest honors conferred through the university system.
Last month, Swami Vidyadhishananda spoke at the Clay Center in Charleston. Focusing on “Extant Philosophical Thought on Evolution,” the monk’s lecture focused on revealing a spiritual based theory of evolution and mutation. He also discussed the mutability of the mind.
As a teacher, the Kriya-yogi monk runs workshops on well-being and wellness and imparts such philosophies as Vedanta, a theory of self-realization, Samkhya, a philosophy similar to the western idea of dualism, and Yoga, a physical and mental meditative practice.
The Swami’s Friday lecture on “Mind-Stuff Inside the Heart” is sponsored by the South Asia Cultural Society and is free and open to the public, but donations to Self Enquiry Life Fellowship are appreciated.
Known for being a servant of humanity, Guru, Master and friend, the monk now lives in California and is head monk of the Self Enquiry Life Fellowship, an organization that educates, promotes, teaches and researches the Vedic heritage, including mystic Himalayan Yoga.
