BECKLEY —
A car rear-ended a school bus Wednesday and reportedly caught fire, but both drivers and all children involved escaped injury, authorities said.
The accident on W.Va. 99 in Glen Daniel was reported at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. Jerry Redden, transportation director for the Raleigh County school system, said a small passenger car struck the school bus in the rear while it was making a stop.
No injuries were reported, Redden said.
The students from Fairdale Elementary were all in their seats at the time and they were quickly evacuated to H&C Hardware (formerly known as Liberty Hardware), Redden said. There, they waited for their parents or another bus brought to the scene to take them home. The number of children on board was unknown because some stops had been made before the collision.
The car was heavily damaged, but damage to the bus was minor, Redden said.
Redden urged motorists to slow down, pay attention and watch for school buses. He noted more people will be on the road as the weather warms up.
“There can be as much danger on a sunny day as there can be on a bad winter’s day,” he said.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Miller said the car’s driver was cited for failure to maintain control.
