A young man is dead after his truck went off an overpass on Robert C. Byrd Drive and landed in Mabscott around 9:45 p.m. Friday, confirmed Sgt. Roy Redden of the Beckley Police Department.
Marcus Leonard, 19, of Lester, died Saturday at Charleston Area Medical Center from injuries sustained during the accident.
Witnesses at the scene told police that the 2000 silver Ford Ranger was traveling north on Robert B. Byrd Drive at a high rate of speed, without headlights, when it suddenly swerved left across southbound traffic and went straight into the guardrail, reported Redden.
The car went through the guardrail and dropped down near Mabscott city limits, coming to rest on its front end on the railroad tracks beside Club Phoenix, he said.
Redden said two passengers, ages 19 and 18, got out of the vehicle on their own, but the driver, Leonard, was cut from the vehicle by Beckley Fire Department.
All three were taken to Raleigh General Hospital, and Leonard was then transported to Charleston.
The extent of the passengers’ injuries was not known, said Redden.
Cpl. Jeremy Young of the Beckley Police Department is in charge of the investigation.
Beckley Police Department, Beckley Fire Department, JanCare Ambulance Service, Mabscott Police, and Mabscott Fire Department responded to the scene, Raleigh 911 reported.
