Students raising money for Newtown, Conn.

BECKLEY — The United Way of Southern West Virginia partnered with the faculty and children at Beckley Elementary School to raise money to send the children of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

This effort came from counselor Christy Norris, who has been promoting the philosophy of “Bucket Filling” to the students at the school. Based on the concept from the children’s book titled “Have You Filled a Bucket Today,” Norris discussed with students from each class the need to “fill the buckets” of the children in Newtown.

After reading the book to each class, the United Way presented the class with its bucket to fill with change which will be sent to Newtown.

All of the change will be presented to United Way Director Margaret O’Neal Monday at 1:15 p.m. at the school to forward on to those in need.

O’Neal says, “This is an example of how something so tragic in Connecticut can be used to teach and encourage empathy with children here in Raleigh County. Ms. Norris and the entire faculty of Beckley Elementary are promoting an awareness of kindness and giving back that is invaluable.”
