‘Sweet’ event to benefit Women’s Resource Center

This Valentine’s Day weekend, why not treat yourself to Something Sweet?

The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) will host “Something Sweet,” a movie screening of “Safe Haven” and sweet tooth taste-off fundraiser Feb. 16 from noon to 3 p.m.

Dee Sizemore, WRC public relations and fundraising development coordinator, said the event is in conjunction with the cookbook fundraising project, “The Family Table Vol. II — Just Desserts.”

“Sweet Seven Semi-finalists” were chosen from recipes submitted for the book from Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas and Summers counties. Cookbooks will be available for the first time at this event for $10 per book.

Each $10 event ticket will include a movie pass, one people’s choice vote and sampling rights to the following desserts: Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings by Lisa Shrewsberry, Great Grandma’s Butterscotch Pie by Audrey Stanton-Smith, Pumpkin Cake by Angela Massey, Applesauce Cake by Lisa Stadelman, Chocolate Covered Cherry Cookies by Tammy Drennen, Oatmeal Pie by Frances Lilly and Chocolate Delight by Becky Pendry.

Celebrity judges include University of Charleston Culinary Department Chef Devin Godbey, WRC Director Patricia Bailey, Rick and Lola Rizer with Southern Communications, Raleigh General Hospital Chef Krzysztof Siuta, and a to-be-determined WVNS-TV personality.

These judges will determine a first, second and third place winner and a people’s choice award will also be given.

The Bake Shoppe and Sweet Nothings will also be on site with samples of their goods for attendees.

Sizemore said the PG-13 movie “Safe Haven,” which is based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, focuses on a woman who is a domestic violence victim who ran away from her abuser.

The back story of the movie provides a tie-in with what the Women’s Resource Center is all about.

The Women’s Resource Center is a private, non-profit agency that provides temporary shelter, counseling, advocacy and supportive services for victims, survivors and witnesses of domestic and sexual violence.

The center operates a 36-bed shelter, the largest in the state, and has been housing victims since 1983. Outreach offices are located in Raleigh, Fayette, Summers, and Nicholas counties.

Sizemore is encouraging everyone to make reservations as soon as possible because seating is limited.
