Raleigh BOE meets new representative

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Raleigh County Board of Education, the board welcomed new student representative Makayla Wykle, a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School.

Makayla will sharing her personal accomplishments and information about her school over three board meetings.

Makayla told the board she attended Maxwell Hill Elementary School where she participated in a rewarding gifted program. She said that while she was academically prepared for the transition to Park Middle School, meeting new people and making new friends was a challenge.

Now a senior at Woodrow, she is a member of the National Honor Society and has been in the top 10 in her class for three years. She is a member of student government, plays volleyball and coaches younger kids in volleyball.

She also favorably described her recent experiences at College Summit at Marshall University and Rhododendron Girls State to the board.

She added that some of her most rewarding experiences have been talking about bullying prevention with Hollywood Elementary students and volunteering with Bradley Elementary’s Santa’s Workshop through the National Honor Society.

Makayla plans to attend West Virginia University and go into occupational therapy, she said.

The board praised Woodrow Wilson’s production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Best,” particularly junior Hannah Wood’s performance of Belle.

“We talk about the wrong things that go on in schools, but this show was an example of everything that is right in our schools,” said board member Richard Jarrell.

“If you didn’t know you were sitting in a high school auditorium, you would not have known it was a high school production,” seconded superintendent Jim Brown.

He specifically mentioned the production’s pit orchestra, which was performed by live musicians as well as student operated digital sound generated through OrchExtra.

The Raleigh County Board of Education will next meet at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the central office on Adair Street, Beckley. The board will unveil a special project in honor of National Digital Learning Day at the Feb. 6 meeting.



Raleigh County Schools will be on a two-hour delay today due to extreme temperatures.
