NRCTC addresses inaccuracy with online calendar

Although the online events calendar noted otherwise, the final day for late registration at New River Community and Technical College was Jan. 11, according to Public Relations Director Barbara Elliott.

The online calendar said the final day for late registration was Jan. 18, but Elliott said that date was inaccurate.

“We sent out letters and e-mails and in some cases, we even made phone calls. The one thing we failed to do was update our events calendar.”

She said registration for the spring semester actually started in October, so students had more than enough time to get registered.

If students register late, they are typically behind academically because the first classes have already taken place. Elliott said late registration also causes issues with financial aid disbursement, buying textbooks, etc.

“It’s a culture we’re trying to change. Many students wait until the last minute to register and we’re really trying to change that.”

Classes started Jan. 14 and Elliott said enrollment is up from this time last year.

The Mercer County campus has an additional 40 students, which is noteworthy with such a small campus.

Elliott said any student with an issue about late registration would be looked at on a case by case basis.
