State Police say an Ohio man faces a felony DUI charge after a fatal accident on the West Virginia Turnpike.
Joseph Scott Adkins, 32, of Newark, Ohio, is charged with DUI involving death, said Capt. L.A. Bailes, Troop 7 commander. Adkins is in the Southern Regional Jail, and jail officials said no bond has been set.
The wreck near Interstate 77’s southbound 39.5-mile marker was reported at 11:58 p.m. Sunday. The location is near the Interstate 64 split. Bailes said Adkins was driving a Saturn passenger vehicle that rear-ended a tractor trailer. A passenger in Adkins’ vehicle, Terry Mays, 43, of Ona, was killed at the scene.
The tractor trailer driver was not injured, Bailes said. Adkins was believed to have been taken to a hospital before he was taken to jail.
Bailes said Adkins was impaired at the time of the wreck, but exactly what impaired him is undetermined.
