Mac’s Toy Fund in dire need for used toys for Dec. 21 event

From Staff Reports

— As Santa’s elves (known in some circles as Mac’s Toy Fund volunteers) prepare for the Dec. 21 Mac’s Toy Fund distribution event, a need for good used toys has become apparent.

Chief Elf Pete Torrico (aka Mac’s vice president) said Wednesday that the numbers of used toys donated, to date, has been small.

Torrico said Santa suggested that boys and girls who are more fortunate than the more than 4,000 who will receive invitations to the toy party, should sort through their toy boxes before he arrives at their homes.

If they clear out the toys they have outgrown or don’t play with anymore, two benefits will be seen: they will have room for the new toys that Santa brings and the children served by Mac’s will have more toys from which to choose.

Each child who receives an invitation to the party from the Department of Health and Human Services will receive one new toy, one used toy and a bag of fruit.

Used toys can be dropped off at BJW Printing on Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley.

Among the new toys are handcrafted wooden tables, dollhouses and more made by inmates at the Federal Correction Institution - Beckley.

Some kids will be able to choose a bike. The Beckley Board of Realtors is conducting a new bike drive and, as they have for many years, Boy Scout Troop 103 is cleaning, repairing and refurbishing donated used bikes.

Bicycles for the Realtors’ drive can be taken to ERA Advantage at 3082 Robert C. Byrd Drive. They are also having a fundraiser Monday at Buffalo Wild Wings; 15 percent of the price a meal will be donated to fund for the purchase of new bikes for Mac’s.

Used bikes also can be dropped off at Beckley Fire Station No. 3 on Eisenhower Drive and behind the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

The weekend weather forecast calls for cold and icy conditions, but many of the children served by Mac’s do not have warm coats to ward off that type of chill. The elves known as Shady Spring High School cheerleaders want to remedy that.

They are conducting a used coat drive again this year. Drop-off locations are Chateau Interiors; Indie; Sparrow Boutique in Beckley; Shady Spring Elementary, Middle and High schools; Ghent Elementary; Daniels Elementary; Walgreen’s, Kroger and CVS in Beaver; Family Coin Laundry and Big Lots in Beckley; Chick-fil-A at The Galleria; Raleigh General Hospital cafeteria; Kroger in Beckley Crossing and on Harper Road; Sam’s Club; The Register-Herald and Jump Zone at Beckley Plaza.

Coats are needed for adults as well as children.

Now in its 83rd year, Mac’s Toy Fund is a totally volunteer organized and operated 501-c-3 charity. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t cost money to run. Monetary donations are needed to fund costs including new toys, the fruit, materials for the wooden toys, bicycle parts and new coats for children.
