Beckley police say a woman trying to retrieve a mattress that had fallen out of a truck bed was struck by an SUV Thursday night on Robert C. Byrd Drive.
Cpl. Andy Darlington said the 20-year-old woman was hauling a mattress when it fell out of the truck bed.
A man stopped to help her, and the two began carrying the mattress across the road, Darlington said.
A second man driving a GMC Jimmy approached, tried to swerve and miss her, and the woman tried to jump out of the way.
The GMC ran over the woman’s leg, Darlington said. The extent of her injuries was unknown, but she was conscious and able to speak at the scene. She was taken to Raleigh General Hospital.
