A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle around 5:30 a.m. Thursday on the Harper Road entrance ramp to the West Virginia Turnpike, confirmed Sgt. J.C. Gillispie of State Police Beckley Detachment.
Gillispie said a 26-year-old white female from Wyoming County was walking in the middle of the ramp that leads onto the interstate and was struck by a large flatbed U-Haul merging into traffic.
The Raleigh County Medical Examiner pronounced the woman dead on the scene, said police.
Police blocked one lane of traffic on Interstate 77 for about two hours and Mabscott Fire Department and Jan-Care Ambulance, responded to the scene, he said.
Officials say it was raining at the time, but that was not a factor in the accident.
The driver is not being held at fault. He is not found to be negligent of any violation of law, according to police.
Cpl. M.E. Underwood and the State Police reconstruction team are still investigating the accident, added Gillispie.
The woman’s name is not being released at this time.
