The Town of Sophia Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the fire station at 201 Riffe St., next door to the Sophia Post Office.
The open house is an opportunity for the community to come out and meet department personnel, look at the various firefighting equipment used by firefighters, ask questions and see first-hand what the recently passed Raleigh County Fire Levy has done to benefit the fire department and community.
All Raleigh County fire departments are invited to bring their levy-purchased equipment to display for county residents.
Sophia City Fire Chief and Town of Sophia Safety Director Jeffrey Pittman said, “This is a prime opportunity to show the citizens of Raleigh County why this levy is so important to us. Before this, most departments struggled with old, outdated equipment; now we have a chance to get updated, modern equipment, which helps us to serve our communities better and more efficiently.”
Fire departments on hand will be glad to answer any questions about the departments’ operations, levy purchases, training and fire safety. Also, anyone interested in joining a fire department may get information on how to do so, requirements, etc., at the open house.
The event will also feature food vendors, music and more.
The event also coincides with the Sophia Bluehawks Reunion, which will have the streets of Sophia busy with classmates from the former Sophia High School.
