Former officer arrested for allegedly sending sexual pictures to minor

Preliminary hearing May 9

— A former Summersville police officer has been arrested for allegedly sending sexual pictures to a minor, according to a criminal complaint from Nicholas County Magistrate Court.

Ethan Jared Shaffer, 23, of Mount Lookout was arrested April 25 and charged with 15 counts of distribution of obscene material to a minor.

West Virginia State Police Trooper R.E. Stephenson got a call from the alleged victim’s father about pornography found on his 17-year-old daughter’s cell phone, according to the criminal complaint.

The alleged victim said she met Shaffer when he pulled her over for an expired vehicle registration when he was an officer with the Summersville Police Department.

When he let her go, Shaffer added her to the “Snapchat” app on his cell phone. The alleged victim said Shaffer started sending her nude images of himself.

She said Shaffer had sent about 400 nude photos since February 2014. She said she only took a screenshot of a few.

Trooper Stephenson found 15 nude photos of Shaffer on the alleged victim’s cell phone.

She said Shaffer had been sending photos since February and never stopped, even after her parents told him to stop calling or contacting her in any way. She said Shaffer kept sending her pictures anyway.

Shaffer has a preliminary hearing set on May 9.
