Art students place in 2013 Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest

Congratulations are in order for Mountain View Christian School’s art department. Three of its art students entered the 2013 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest, and all three were honored to place among the winning entries.

This program is designed to promote knowledge of waterfowl conservation and gives students the opportunity to express what they have learned artistically.

The students must choose a particular waterfowl from a list that is provided and learn about that fowl’s habitat, body structure, and other information. They must then submit an original work of art depicting this bird in its natural surroundings. These entries are submitted statewide; then each state sends its Best of Show to compete nationally.

The winner on the national level has the honor of seeing his or her work of art reproduced on the following year’s Duck Stamp. The proceeds from the sale of the stamp help to save our waterfowl. More than 500 pieces were submitted this year.

Only 100 pieces were awarded the titles of best of show, first, second or third place, and honorable mention. The contest is divided into groups based on grade level. Katie Conelly was entered in the seventh-ninth-grade group and placed third. Hannah Vicars and Cheyenne Lilly both fell into the 10-12th-grade category, and both received honorable mentions.
