Local post offices gather troop supplies

In effort to show support for our troops, several local post offices collected care package supplies to send overseas and the response was overwhelming.

Cool Ridge Postmaster Misty Osborne said over 10,000 pounds of items were collected.

She said she was concerned that the project would not be very successful because of the recent storm, but the turnout was great.

“We tripled what we collected last year,” Osborne said. “I’m thrilled we got the response we did.”

She got the idea to host the event from a couple of her frequent postal customers, Andrea Miller of Cool Ridge and Becky Maynor of Bradley.

These two have been shipping care packages to troops for many years and Osborne wanted to get on board.

Post offices in Cool Ridge, Flat Top, Ghent, Josephine, Jumping Branch, Nimitz, Odd, Princewick, Shady Spring and White Oak collected items through Friday.

Items such as hand warmers, lip balm, granola bars, cookies, canned soup and hand sanitizers were collected.

Shady Spring Middle School heard about the project and created many cards and letters to be sent along with the packages.

Maynor and Miller will assemble the care packages, which will be mailed via flat rate priority shipping boxes at a $2 discounted rate.

Osborne said mail to an APO/FPO address is eligible for a $2 discount.

Osborne added, “It was truly a blessing to work with fellow employees of the Postal Service and customers in order to make this event a success.”
