Turkey dinner proceeds to help Burlington purchase generators

Last week’s snow storm and wide-spread power outages caused Burlington United Methodist Family Services Auxiliary to push back its annual turkey dinner, but it also inspired what the meal will purchase.

Martha Aliff, president of the Burlington United Methodist Auxiliary, said the organization plans to buy generators to help power the Beckley campus that houses 30 youth. After the June derecho and Superstorm Sandy, Aliff said the Auxiliary wants to ensure that there will be power in the buildings during any future power outages. With recent meals sales, the auxiliary has been able to purchase new lights, flooring and an ice machine for the gymnasium.

Several volunteers — from Raleigh, Fayette, Greenbrier and Summers counties — on Thursday prepared turkey and dressing for an estimated 300 meals that will be served today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Burlington United Methodist gymnasium, located at 4700 Robert C. Byrd Drive. In addition to the turkey and dressing, the dinners will have green beans, potatoes, rolls, cranberry relish and a dessert.

Aliff and members of the auxiliary say they come back and make the homemade dinners year after year for the camaraderie and “for the kids,” and they hope the community comes out and grabs lunch or dinner for the same reasons.

Meals are $8 each for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Take out and delivery is also available. To have a meal delivered, call 304-252-8508.
