The superstorm born of Hurricane Sandy has devastated the East Coast in many ways, including the shortfall of nearly 11,000 units of blood and platelets because of the cancellation of hundreds of American Red Cross blood drives.
Over 325 blood drives were canceled in 13 states so far, with many more cancellations expected throughout the week due to power outages and flooding.
Scott Hill, with the Beckley chapter of the American Red Cross, said even when blood drives are shut down, the need is still there.
“A lot of our blood units go to cancer patients. They need blood transfusions no matter what the weather is.”
Hill said blood donors can donate once every 56 days and he highly encourages everyone to come to the upcoming drives.
“Come out and help the community if you can.”
