Calling young mad scientists

New River Community and Technical College is offering a fun and educational camp during Thanksgiving break. The Mad Scientist Academy for youth ages 5-12 will take place Nov. 19-20 at New River’s Nicholas County Campus in Summersville. The camp will feature various aspects of science.

A meteorologist from a Charleston news station will visit to talk about how science is used to predict the weather, and students will participate in several weather- related experiments and activities.

Other topics will be Simple Machines, Gases and Density, Chemistry and Engineering. Students will make a small robot and work with Lego Robotics and Sumo Wrestling Robots. Lego Robotics is part of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiative from the WVU Extension Service, which will be providing the equipment for this aspect of the camp.

The academy will meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $50 per student, which includes snacks and lunch daily. Preregistration is required as this camp is expected to fill up quickly.

New River is sponsoring an essay contest through which one child will win free tuition to the camp. The essay contest deadline has been extended to Nov. 3. Contestants should write 100 words or fewer on the topic “How I will use science when I grow up.” An official entry form can be found at www.newriver.edu// workforce-education/community-education.
