Non-emergency lockdowns reported at two schools

BECKLEY — Raleigh County parents became concerned after hearing reports that Shady Spring High and Beckley-Stratton Middle schools were on a soft lockdown Monday.

Raleigh Superintendent Jim Brown explained the lockdowns were not due to an emergency and were “done for the safety of the students as a precaution. Teaching and learning still continued. Situations at both schools were resolved in a short amount of time and there was not an interruption to the instructional process.”

Brown said a student at Beckley-Stratton was causing a problem and instead of calling attention to it, students stayed in their classes under a brief lockdown while teachers and administration handled it.

The lockdown at Shady Spring was due to a routine drug sweep conducted by the State Police. During these sweeps, it is customary for students to remain in their classroom.

Brown said school administrators are encouraged to send alerts to parents when schools are under non-emergency related lockdowns but functioning normally.
