Dinner theater to aid UMT youths

BECKLEY — Good food and Broadway musical selections will combine Sunday evening for United Methodist Temple’s dinner theater event, which will boast iconic Broadway musical selections for local lovers of theater and music.

The benefit event — which will raise funds to send UMT youth on their annual Red Tape Choir Tour as well as upcoming mission trips — will feature members of the New River Jazz Band, a men’s quartet and several solos by community musicians and vocalists.

Iconic musical selections including “Tomorrow” from “Annie,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Get Me to the Church on Time” from “My Fair Lady” will be performed, among many others.

“We will be featuring many talented musicians,” said UMT Minister of Music Daniel Spurgeon. “It’s just going to be a fun evening.”

Spurgeon said one of the evening’s highlights will be a special organ performance of “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Nine-year-old Audrey Smith will don Dorothy’s red slippers for “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Woodrow Wilson student Maggie Cook will be filling the characters of Little Orphan Annie and Ariel from “The Little Mermaid.”

Two local band directors, Bill Bailey of Woodrow Wilson and Mary Withers of Shady Spring Middle, will also be filling seats as part of the band. Joyce Bailey will be accompanying the band on piano.

Dinner tickets cost $20 per person and the meal will begin at 5 p.m. in the Friendship Hall at UMT. Those wishing to only attend the show should arrive at 7 p.m. Admission to the concert is free, but attendees are asked to give a donation to the cause, if able.

Tickets must be purchased by Thursday and can be acquired by calling the UMT office at 304-252-6213. A nursery service will be provided for children at no additional cost. If planning to use the nursery service, individuals are asked to inform the office at the time of ticket purchase.
