Three years to the day after 29 coal miners were killed in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine explosion, Raleigh County will dedicate a memorial to the men at the county courthouse. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Friday in the courthouse; and, after the ceremony inside, participants will move outside to unveil the monument.
Raleigh County Commission President Dave Toliver said the memorial plaque to the UBB miners is “beautiful” and is looking forward to the ceremony, which will take place inside Judge Burnside’s old courtroom on the second floor of the county courthouse. Refreshments will also be served at the ceremony.
“It will really be nice,” Toliver said.
Tuesday morning, crews were working to set the memorial in place.
