Help offered in choosing Part D plan

Officials at the Council on Aging are offering seniors in southern West Virginia assistance with their enrollment for 2013 Medicare Part D plans.

Council on Aging Executive Director Jennifer Gibson said the choices seniors make regarding this medical plan can be critically important.

“Seniors have important choices about how to make the best use of their Medicare eligibility. There are opportunities to choose an effective co-pay plan and to save money. Our staff is in position to help seniors choose the plan that works best for them.”

Gibson said the council will have two counselors available at its Itmann location to talk with seniors about their understanding of the plan, decision-making and document preparation.

The Council on Aging is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Medicare Open Enrollment period ends Dec. 7.

Gibson emphasized that the federal health care law allows everyone on Medicare to receive preventive services such as mammograms and other cancer screenings for free. The health care law also makes prescription drugs more affordable for many seniors.
