The body of a 49-year-old woman was found early Tuesday morning inside her burned home at 608 Ewart Ave. in Sprague, Raleigh County Sheriff Steve Tanner said.
The fire, which was contained quickly around 1:30 a.m. by Bradley and Beaver fire departments, is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Tanner said.
He added that it is typical to treat a home fire with a fatality as a crime scene until the cause of death and fire is proven and he is hopeful investigators will have more information within the next few days.
The woman’s body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s office to determine the cause of death, Tanner said. Investigators withheld the woman’s name because family members had not been notified.
Tanner also said that no one else was in the home at the time of the fire and that the entire house was not consumed by the fire.
The Beckley City Fire Department initially responded to the call, but when it was determined the home was outside of the city limits, Bradley and Beaver were called to the scene.
Investigators were still at the home at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
