Applications being taken for program

The 2012 annual Shop-With-A-Cop Program, sponsored by the Fayette County Memorial Lodge No. 118 of the Fraternal Order of Police is now accepting applications for children wanting to participate in the program.

Children must be between the ages of 3 and 12 in order to qualify for the program; also, they must not be receiving assistance from any other program, and a child’s family must beet income guidelines to qualify.

Chris A. Young, president of the Fayette County Memorial Lodge No. 118 F.O.P., says members would love to make the program available to every child in the community; however, limited resources require them to limit Shop-With-A-Cop available to only the most needy children — those who would not otherwise have a Christmas.

Only children who reside in Fayette County are eligible to participate in this program.

Those wanting to submit children’s names for possible participation may call 304-719-1893. The answering service will take applications over the phone.

Parents or guardians of the children chosen to participate in this program will receive a written notification through the mail. The notification will tell guardians the date and time of their scheduled shopping experience at Fayetteville Walmart.

Young said because the Lodge tries to make the program available to as many children as possible, it is important that parents or guardians make every effort to have their child/children present at the designated time.

Solicitation flyers to raise money for the program will be sent in the mail this week. Members of the Fayette County Lodge No. 118 of the F.O.P. are asking that members of the community donate as much as possible to the cause.

Unlike some other programs, Fayette County does not rely on telemarketing to raise money — the funding relies on the mailed solicitations, Young said. All of the money stays in Fayette County instead of a portion going to pay a professional fundraising company, he added.

“The amount of money we receive in donations dictates how many children we can serve,” Young said. “The need in Fayette County is great, so we need as much help and support from the community as possible.”
