Application deadline extended for practical nursing program

New River Community and Technical College has extended the application deadline for the Fall 2013 cohort of the School of Practical Nursing until April 1.

The practical nursing program is an intensive one-year certificate program designed to prepare students for careers as Licensed Practical Nurses in a variety of health care settings. The curriculum provides students with classroom and clinical experiences in a variety of acute care, extended care and outpatient facilities. It also includes courses in pharmacology and nutrition.

The program is designed for career laddering, awarding appropriate credits for a seamless transfer into more advanced nursing programs of study, according to Joyce Egnor, RN, MSN, program director.

She added that New River’s graduates have an excellent record of passing the practical nursing licensing exam on their first attempt. The program is fully accredited by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses.

The School of Practical Nursing is headquartered on New River’s Nicholas County Campus in Summersville, with classes also offered at the Beckley Campus and the Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg.

Prerequisite courses required for admission to the New River School of Practical Nursing include English 101, Math 101 or higher (Intermediate Algebra preferred), and Anatomy and Physiology I and II (lecture and lab). Students much earn at least a C in all prerequisite courses.

For more information, contact the admissions office on the campus you wish to attend, or call or e-mail Tina Bryant at 304-883-2481, tbryant@newriver.edu.
