— If you’re looking for a unique opportunity to make a difference in the community, Beckley Fire Chief Billie Trump encourages you to apply for an entry-level position at the Beckley Fire Department.

Applications are being accepted through 4:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at City Hall or Beckley Fire Department Station One on Third Avenue.

Trump said the station currently has one opening, but as positions need filled, they will select qualified applicants from their list.

U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 are eligible to apply.

Veterans are asked to bring a copy of their DD214 for preference points.

The written portion of the test will be held March 7 at 6 p.m. at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Trump said the written portion is a general knowledge test and the next phase will test physical ability.

The top 20 candidates are given an opportunity to get in shape and a fitness test will be given in six to eight weeks.

The final part of the application process is a background check with the Beckley Police Department.

“We’re looking for people with good moral character,” Trump said.

“It’s the best job you can have. It’s a unique opportunity because every day is different. You’re faced with new challenges, both mental and physical. Every day is an opportunity to make people’s lives better.”
