Prospective students and members of the community came out for UC-Beckley’s open house Tuesday.
People could fill out applications, meet with the alumni associations now housed under the University of Charleston banner, and meet some of the administrative staff that will be stationed here in Beckley.
Just after the open house started, there were already more than a dozen students looking into the school.
“A lot of students here in Beckley have been waiting to find out what would be happening with Mountain State. We are trying to let them know we are here and what programs will be available,” explained Scott Castleman, communications director for the University of Charleston.
Both Carmen Squires and Tarnisha West were filling out applications for the school.
Squires explained that as a mother of two, she is hoping to get a career established and is interested in the business program.
Likewise, West is looking into the business program and hopes to build her own business.
West attended The College of West Virginia and is looking forward to coming back under UC’s banner.
“I’m really looking forward to school,” added Squires.
Heather Williams attended MSU in the past and Tuesday talked with a admissions counselor about applying.
She hopes to continue with her degree in biology and go into environmental science.
“The biology professors I spoke to from Charleston gave me great info on what classes I need when I come back. The transition to UC seems really positive,” Williams said.
Also at the open house was Associate Professor of English Nada Najjar.
Najjar worked at MSU and has been hired by UC to continue her teaching for UC-Beckley and online.
She said teachers have already attended training in Charleston and she found the staff and the administration to be more than welcoming and transparent.
“I hope the community really rallies to support University of Charleston. They are sincere about providing quality education here. The community deserves UC and we can be good partners, too,” she added.
