Hinton City Fire Department responded to the old Summers County ice plant just before 6 a.m. Saturday after a bystander working nearby called 911 reporting a soft glow in one of the building’s windows.
Fire rescue worker Josh Dawson explained that his crew arrived to find a small fire contained to one room of the commercial building, which has not been in operation for several years now. The building — currently being used by its owner for storage — takes up one-half of a city block on the corner of Fifth and Commercial avenues in downtown Hinton.
Firefighters were able to reach the room after a struggle getting though multiple chained-up doors, which Dawson explained was more burdensome than the brief process of extinguishing the fire.
No one was inside the building at the time. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted to further investigate the fire’s cause.
