'Transplants' tell stories about adopted home through songs

BECKLEY — Two talented Greenbrier County women, who call themselves Little Sparrow, came to Sunday@Two at Tamarack to delight the audience with their gospel covers and original mountain tunes.

Mary Dailey and Jeanne Hoffman say they are “transplants” to West Virginia, but they say they love it here and it certainly shows in their music.

Their voices complemented each other perfectly as they sang about love, family, and “cornbread and beans.”

The duo joined forces last June after they sang a gospel song together and liked how they sounded. The Sunday@Two session was the first show the two have played outside Lewisburg.

Although many of their tunes were played a cappella, Dailey and Hoffman also took turns strumming an acoustic guitar and an upright bass.

Their mellow mountain music told stories of grandpa’s porch swing, opposites attracting and falling in love, and even an ode to coal miners.

Little Sparrow drew quite a crowd at the Beckley venue, and many audience members tapped their toes along to the soothing beats.

The duo spotted their No. 1 fan in the back of the crowd, Whitley, and thanked him for coming from Lewisburg to see them perform.

Although the women of Little Sparrow are a relatively new combo, the pair of their voices is something to be heard.

They invited everyone to come to Lewisburg and see them play in the future.
