Raleigh County high school art students are hearing about the Piney Creek Watershed Association (PCWA) and being given an opportunity to help educate their community and win prizes through “Full STEAM Ahead.”
The association recently received a grant through the Beckley Area Foundation to help integrate the arts with math and science, which is why the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) becomes Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM).
In order to achieve the integration goal, the Jim Fedders, executive director of the Association, and Kara Van Pelt, Beckley Sanitary Board education and communication specialist, are explaining the importance of maintaining a clean water system and how they can help to achieve it.
A poster contest is open to the students whose art classes heard the information presented by Fedders and Van Pelt. Near the end of April, the posters will be displayed in the lobby of The Register-Herald; after judging, gift certificates for art supplies will be awarded to the first through fourth place finishers. In addition, the first place winner’s poster will be used on literature the PCWA gives to the public and on its educational displays.
Fedders says for the Watershed Association, students and educators, the contest is a “win-win-win.”
In addition gift certificates prizes, each art teacher who hosted the presentation received $200 to purchase art supplies for the classroom.
