The Met: Live in HD continues Saturday with Verdi’s ‘Otello’

Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s presentation of 2012-2013 The Met: Live in HD continues Saturday, Oct. 27, with Verdi’s “Otello.”

Renée Fleming sings one of her greatest roles, the innocent Desdemona, in Verdi’s towering tragedy, based on Shakespeare’s “Othello.” Singing the title role, which is described as one of the most difficult and rewarding in all of opera, is South African tenor Johan Botha.

Also featured are German bass-baritone Falk Struckmann as the villainous Iago and Michael Fabiano as Cassio.

Acclaimed Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov makes his Met debut, leading the thrilling drama which is considered by many to be Verdi’s masterpiece.

This is the second season GVT has presented the Peabody and Emmy-award winning series which allows more than 1,700 theaters in 54 countries to afford their audiences an opportunity to enjoy opera performances, live as they take place at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Met opera stars serve as hosts for the series, conducting live interviews with the cast, crew and production teams and introducing behind-the-scenes features.

“Otello” begins at 12:55 p.m. Brunch, catered by Stella’s, is offered one hour before the show, offering patrons an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal and an informative presentation by guest speaker Dr. James Caplinger.
