Hanna, Cahill victorious in Greenbrier

LEWISBURG — After a hiatus of 12 years, Woody Hanna will again be a Greenbrier County commissioner as 2013 gets under way.

Hanna, a Democrat who previously served a single six-year term in the Western District commission seat, won Tuesday’s general election, defeating Republican Sherman McClung 7,285 to 5,154, unofficial ballot totals show.

An educator for 36 years, as well as a lifelong farmer, Hanna pledged during his campaign that he would resign his teaching post if elected, in order to devote as much time as necessary to the commission.

One of the hardest-fought races in the county was for the office of sheriff. Democratic challenger Jan Cahill upended incumbent Republican Sheriff Jim Childers, taking nearly 58 percent of the vote. The unofficial total for each man was 7,390 votes for Cahill and 5,420 for Childers.

Cahill is a former member of the West Virginia State Police.

Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney Patrick I. Via (R) easily won re-election, almost doubling the ballot total amassed by newcomer Ryan H. Keesee (D). The unofficial count found Via with 8,139 votes to Keesee’s 4,308.

All three of Greenbrier County’s incumbent magistrates were re-elected, out-polling challenger John W. Reed (R), who received 5,421 votes. Winning fresh four-year terms were Brenda L. Campbell (D), 7,798 votes; Brenda J. Smith (D), 7,489 votes; and Charles D. Beard (D), 7,033 votes.

Running unopposed, Assessor Steven Gerry Keadle (D) won re-election with 10,199 votes, and Surveyor Charles “Chuck” Smith was re-elected with 9,788 votes.

In all, 13,173 of Greenbrier County’s 25,605 registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s general election, a turnout of more than 50 percent.
