Pair of Liberty students win Globaloria game competition

Two Liberty High School students won the second annual Globaloria Game Design Competition from World Wide Workshop.

Globaloria state director Deborah Super recognized the winning students, James Smith and Jordan Manacari, at Tuesday’s board meeting. James and Jordan created an educational racing game called “The Final Countdown,” she said.

In their game, players must race to raise money to clean up the BP oil spill in the affected states of Florida, Louisiana, Texas and California.

“This competition was some stiff competition. We congratulate James and Jordan on developing an innovative instructional game,” said Super. “Principal Clyde Stepp and Superintendent Charlotte Hutchens have supported the Globaloria program in Raleigh County to provide students with skills to participate in global technology.”

This is the second year students from Liberty High School have won this competition. Stepp said he hopes to make next year the third.

Jordan will continue working with game design at East Tennessee University, and James will continue as a senior at Liberty.

Super presented the students with Flip video cameras and certificates at the meeting.

The Liberty High game is featured online at www.worldwideworkshop.org/stem-winners-2011.

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor served as honorary chair of the competition alongside judges Bob Wise, former state governor; Gayle Manchin, former first lady; and Priscilla Haden, president of the state board of education and others.

Globaloria is a social learning network teaching students to make education web games. It has been utilized in West Virginia public schools since 2007.
