OAK HILL — An Oak Hill man was arrested Thursday night following a tip received earlier in the evening by the Fayette County sheriff’s office, authorities said.
August Moore, 50, was being held at Southern Regional Jail Friday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
According to Sheriff Steve Kessler, the information received Thursday informed deputies that two individuals had purchased a large quantity of drugs in the Charlotte, N.C., area and were transporting them to Oak Hill for resale.
In addition, the tip provided a vehicle description and license plate number, which enabled the sheriff’s K-9 unit and uniformed officers, detectives from the drug unit and detective bureau, and the Oak Hill Police Department to set up surveillance in an attempt to locate and stop the vehicle, Kessler said.
Kessler said detectives spotted Moore’s vehicle around 9 p.m. on U.S. 19 in the Oak Hill area.
The vehicle was stopped by Cpl. Chris Young and Sgt. Shannon Prince of the Oak Hill Police Department, and officers seized approximately 2 pounds of marijuana — worth more than $2,100 — and $760 in cash from the vehicle, Kessler said.
“This arrest was the result of a joint effort between the Oak Hill Police Department and the sheriff’s office,” the sheriff said.
He added that the investigation is ongoing, and anyone wishing to provide drug information to the sheriff’s office may submit information by calling Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867, the sheriff’s drug unit at 304-574-4305 or through the Crime Tips section of the sheriff’s Web site at www.fayettesheriffwv.net.
