BECKLEY — Beckley city officials say transportation is their top priority as they work toward getting more grant funding.
Mayor Emmett Pugh presented a list of community priority rankings during Tuesday night’s Beckley Common Council meeting. Transportation improvements were ranked at the top.
Pugh explained these rankings, done every year, are sent to the Region 1 Planning and Development Council in Princeton. That agency coordinates federal and state funding in Raleigh, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Summers and Wyoming counties. Communities with project categories ranked as higher priorities are more likely to get grants related to those categories.
Projects like the Z-way are a major priority, Pugh said. Better roads to efficiently move more people are essential for economic development.
He noted the Boy Scouts of America is developing 10,000 acres in Fayette County that will eventually be home to the organization’s National Jamboree.
