Fall leaf pickup in Beckley delayed by bad weather

By Fred Pace
Register-Herald Reporter

Blame it on Mother Nature.

“Our fall leaf pickup has been delayed a little bit by the snowy weather,” said Greg Lambert, deputy superintendent for the Beckley Board of Public Works.

Lambert says the pickup began Monday and should be finished by the end of the week, which would be on schedule.

“As long as we don’t get any more bad weather, we should have it all done by Friday,” Lambert said.

Lambert said residents need to remember that limbs no bigger than 2 inches in diameter will be picked up.

Household items are not included in the cleanup, he added.

Lambert said all leaves need to be bagged and on the curbside by 7 a.m. in the areas that have yet to be picked up.

The pickup began with Ward I and concludes Friday with Ward 5.

The Board of Public Works has 53 employees and a large fleet of equipment dedicated to maintaining the streets, parking lots, parks and common areas of the city. The department is tasked with maintaining the 517 streets in the city, including paving, drainage, street signage and snow removal.

In addition to the fall leaf pickup, Public Works is also responsible for bi-weekly recycling pickups and the annual spring clean-up.
