Students enjoy Read to Me Day

Register-Herald Reporter

Coal City Elementary School was one of numerous schools across the state that celebrated Read to Me Day Thursday.

Curby the Robot, brought in from the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority, was in attendance to educate kids on the importance of reading and recycling.

“It was wonderful. The kids danced with Curby and thought he was great — we did the twist with him,” reading teacher Janet Smith said.

Smith says Read to Me Day, which reinforces the importance of reading, is essential because “sometimes children need to see different role models, to see that there’s something to reach for.”

“Reading is a journey, and once you start on that journey, you can travel all the way through life because you have the skills to do anything you want to in life, which is very important.”

Funded by City National Bank and the Beckley Area Foundation, Curby visits local schools throughout the year.

The school thanked Appalachian Power, City National Bank, various news organizations, Starbucks in Beckley and parents who brought in food, making the event possible.
